This week’s dose of inspiration comes all the way from down under! Paula May is a poet, photographer, and world wanderer – she’s traveled and taken photographs across the globe, and she’s seemingly always able to capture the natural beauty of wherever she is.
Her pursuit of adventure and the sanctity of being in nature goes beyond her own personal travels. Among the services she offers as a professional photographer are descriptions of destination wedding packages as well as elopements, so even in her clientele she’s seeking adventure.
We’ll let her take it from here, but after you read her answers to our 5 Creator Questions, be sure to check out her site, and remember to appreciate whatever natural beauty you find around you today 🙂
Who are you and what do you do?
I work as a wedding photographer mostly, capturing all things love and connection. My work is heavily influenced by nature, authenticity, and magic.
How did you get started?
Photography for me started off as hobby. Travelling and capturing my experiences, keeping memories forever encapsulated in a photograph was where my passion began.
What sets you apart?
I am very honest in what I do. I share real moments, and express myself as authentically as possible. Nature has always been a big inspiration to me, and having that as a driver with my creativity helps my work stand out, especially in today’s digital world. Bringing my audience back to the simple beauties we are surrounded by everyday.
What obstacles did you have to overcome?
About a year ago I lost everything in a hard drive malfunction. All of my photos disappeared and it hit me hard. But as difficult as it was to accept, I think I needed it. I was fighting a losing battle with photography, trying to find my place and my style. So this experience gave me the opportunity to completely start over. Most of my photos were lifestyle, travel and portraits. But ever since then I decided to start in a new direction. I am a lover of love, and eventually I was drawn to areas of photography that expressed that.
Do you have any tips for other creators?
Perseverance is something you must attain. From my experience I know that if you just keep working at the things you love, you will get to where you want to be. Because even though there are many talented people out there. It’s the ones that never give up who prevail in the end.
While Paula may not be the first to say that you should do what you love, she’s certainly a shining example of embodying that sentiment. Find the simple beauty in your surroundings, whatever they may be, and find the passion to persevere. And, as always, happy creating!
