This week’s dose of inspiration comes from the International School of Myanmar. The former educators on the IM Creator staff were particularly enthusiastic about this ambitious project, and how well implemented it was.
Many people have used our platform to build personal and professional portfolios, small business sites, and other such “typical” websites, but ISM has used it to create something rather unique – a visual framework for educational curriculum.
Class is in session! Check out how Curriculum Coordinator Jimbo San Juan answered to our 5 Creator Questions:
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Jimbo San Juan, curriculum coordinator at the International School of Myanmar. My advocacy in this field is to make curriculum alive and vibrant through a visible curriculum framework. This project is inspired by several contemporary research and practices including: Understanding by Design, Context Mapping, Curriculum 21, Visible Thinking of Project Zero. The idea is to develop a vision driven framework to enhance contemporary learning where teachers can easily connect and have a collaborative space and parameters for designing and innovating learning.
The beauty and simplicity of IM Creator helped us focus on developing a learning framework.
How did you get started?
It was tough when we started. All components of K-12 curriculum was either printed or stored in a disk and it took a while for me and my team of department heads to sort which among the documents reflect our practice. We also consulted with Atlas Rubicon, leading company for curriculum management, and thought about using them to house all our documents. After review, our community realized that we do not need a curriculum database provider, instead we need a framework alongside with database system to mirror our teaching and learning practice. IM Creator provided us the UI platform while Google drive and apps provided us with database.
What sets you apart?
I think, the capacity to look at things differently and be bold enough to test these different thinking. If wrong, I learn from it and move on. If right, then I lobby for support then pursue it.
I guess I was a lone nut in this project 🙂
What obstacles did you have to overcome?
Approval for this project. No one believed me that curriculum could be simplified into a visible framework and that I could create a platform to house it. And it only cost the school $96 vs a curriculum management software that costs $4,000 or more.
Do you have any tips for other creators?
Know and connect with your content and audience, the design and layout will follow after.
Okay, pencils down! But be sure to bring a notepad when you go check out the full ISM site here.
