This week’s dose of inspiration comes from UK-based student and artist, Hannah K Powell. An inquisitive and inspiring illustrator, she has a clear talent for the visual arts.
Her environmental works vary from artistic natural landscapes to architectural renderings and really show off her impressive range as an artist. Let’s check out her answers to our 5 Creator Questions:
Who are you and what do you do ?
I am a final year computer animation student at Bournemouth University (UK). I’m quite comfortable in most areas of the animation pipeline but have a special interest in visual development and illustration. I’m currently in the throes of my final project – I don’t get out much! most of my time is spent either in Photoshop, Maya or Zbrush. I graduate very soon and created an online portfolio to link to prospective employers. I own a lot of houseplants and don’t get as much time to draw as I would like.
How did you get started?
Mostly by discovering that you could draw in photoshop, and then finding out that there were things other than a mouse or a trackpad to draw in photoshop with. Then, about 7 years after that I opened up Chrome and typed in “best websites to put a portfolio on” and found IM Creator!
What sets you apart?
My terrible hair. There are other things… but that’s the main one.
What obstacles did you have to overcome?
Myself, mostly. I’m a bit of a perfectionist and very aware of the flaws in my work, which means I have trouble getting started a lot of the time, and then knowing when to stop. I have a long way to go, but setting up a space online has helped me organise my current work so I can reflect and improve on it. Putting yourself out there is very daunting.
Do you have any other tips for creators?
Even if it’s scary, try to put yourself online. You might get a feature!
In addition to the curated portfolio she has on site, she also links out to her social profiles which include some work not found on the site – it’s almost like a treasure hunt!
